Guest House History
The Bennett Guest House is named after Nelson Bennett, a driving force behind the development of Fairhaven in the late 1800s. According to the old records we were able to locate, it appears that the Bennett Guest House itself was built around 1898.

Nelson Bennett was a mover and shaker of his time. Originally from the East Coast, he was an ox or mule driver who made his way across the plains and through the Rocky Mountains. When he was young, he saw the enormous profits being derived from the overland trade, and soon he was driving his own teams and selling his own goods. As railroads were extended in the desert and highlands, wagons became obsolete for transportation of goods, and Bennett began to contract to build railroads.

According to an article written by Frank Wilkeson for the March 2, 1890, edition of the New York Times:

He built railroads in the Rocky Mountains, on the Great Plains, in the arid basin that is between the Rocky and Cascade Mountains, and in the latter range. He blasted the long tunnel through the Cascade Mountains, through which the Northern Pacifics cars roll when on their way to and from Puget Sound. Every contract he undertook he fulfilled and made money in blocks at the work. He became thoroughly familiar with the whole country west of the Missouri River. He knows its freight producing capacity. He knows the probable output of all the great mining camps. He built street car lines and established electric plants in towns in whose future he had confidence. His investments are scattered over half a continent, and every night he knows precisely how he stands financially with the world.

When he reached Tacoma, Wash., Bennett proceeded to build it into a tremendous city. Then he set his sights further north.

According to the Whatcom Museum of History & Art's web site, Fairhaven was founded in 1883 by Daniel Harris. (Youll see a life size bronze statue of Dirty Dan, as he was affectionately known, in Fairhavens Village Green park.) Nelson Bennett came along in 1888 and bought the area from Harris. Bennett was intent upon turning Fairhaven into a thriving hub of business and industry complete with major railroad and steamship links.

Bennett successfully attracted other developers, including C.X. Larrabee and James Wardner to his venture. Real estate boomed. Buildings went up so fast they forgot space for alleys in the business blocks. Roads were graded and land was cleared to make Fairhaven the hub city of North Puget Sound! states the Museums web site.

The site continues, The big depression of 1893 halted all the action. The boom quickly became a bust. Banks failed, businesses closed, the depression took Fairhaven down with it, as well as activities in the other three cities (Whatcom, New Whatcom/Sehome and Bellingham) located on Bellingham Bay. The year 1900 brought slow growth, and Fairhavens deep water made it the site of the majority of the areas industry even though the majority of the bay population was in Whatcom, to the north. In 1903, the residents of Fairhaven and Whatcom voted to consolidate as the city of Bellingham.

But the infrastructure of Fairhaven has survived. Many of its original buildings remain standing. And today, the Bennett Guest House is located on Bennett Avenue, so named for the man who helped build the area more than a century ago.
